This song gives me goose bumps, i think it's the progressive build from soft and pretty to hard and strong. Until i saw the lyrics i thought he was speaking in a foreign language at times haha.

I tend to stay away from these poppy over played songs, especially since they come out with songs like “dirty little secret” which was incredibly dumb, but All-American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell” is pretty damn classic in its meaning. I’m sure a lot of us would like to be able to say that to our X’s hehe.
Unusual Track, but very fun song: Metronomy’s “A Thing For Me”
Colder – To The Music, not sure why i bought this one, but i was desparate for a new sound, it’s got a good beat, guy has that kind of “Lights and Music one more time” voice. Probably could have skipped it. lol.
The Ruse – Beautiful is Gone, some itunes single of the week freebie, sounds like Coldplay without anything interesting in the sound or to sing about :(.
Rain On by The Woods. I love this track, buy it now! Has that high pitched voice like Metronomy, but much chiller, and great drums. ***
The Virgins – Rich Girls. Great beat you’ll f’n love it i swear the second it starts. Great sound. “i’ll tell you everything i know every little thing i know”. I’m beginning to enjoy the vocal range of artists voice. I love the screaming anger in The Walkmen – The Rat song, but it’s necessary, for that expression of those feelings we’ve all shared, that one long lost relationship. you’re just super pissed at. But other songs like Thing For Me, Rain On, Rich Girls, it’s more fun/unique when the artist has a range that you can easily detect. I dig it.
Fever Ray – When I Grow Up. I’m loving it, the beat, the techno chicks voice. It’s quite sick. There’s some kind of accent to her voice i can’t figure it out. ***
I know you’ve already listened to Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone is a new favorite off their album i have the whole thing, but i’ve finally gotten use to his voice and can actually understand what he’s saying now. At first i thought he was speaking a foreign language, i just couldn’t figure it out haha. Social Worker is beautiful. ***
The Ruby Suns – Kenya Dig It. Best closing song i’ve heard in a long time. Blast this sucker the sound is incredible. I can’t stop listening to it. It’s not even new. But i just heard it for the first time so i’m guessing it hasn’t got much radio play. ***
Fever Ray – Keep the streets empty for me, Triangle Walks, i opted to buy the whole album i dig the sound, you might not want to spend 10 bux on it, but these are two other songs to check out for sure if you liked When I Grow Up. The style reminds me of Kosheen – Resist (previously mentioned here).
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Young Adult Friction. Long name amazing results. yeah that’s kind of how i feel haha.

Grizzly Bear – The good: Sounds like Fleet Foxes. More is better, i’ve been missing the new fleet foxes stuff. He’s been releasing stuff in a solo album called White Antelope? but i haven’t seen anything available for purchase yet arg. Grizzly Bear’s been getting a lot of play psychadelic folk is what they’re calling this. “Two Weeks” is a great song, reminds me of Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot, i like all these groups even if their stuff sounds the same, we get that great vocal range again i’ve been digging. I guess i bought the whole album, a reviewer said it was terrific and i love getting really involved in writing and bearly paying attention to a delicious album so that’s where i’m at i guess.
Sonic Youth – Antenna ( a new song), Unmade Bed (an older song). I love it that they’re releasing new stuff as i only recently got into them. They’ve got the same great voice, you can tell it’s aged a little, it’s like a great whiskey, it gets better, trust me, luckily in this case, the price stays the same. :).
Mew – Introducing Palace Players. I’m loving sirius xmu on my iphone because now when i hear new music i can add it to a basket and buy it later. I finally went to my basket today and bought everything up above here. It took foerver on the 3g network to download, but its so easy, i never even steal songs now anymore. crazy haha. Finally technology has gone in the right direction and made life so easy you can’t resist. Mew has that classic song zookeeper that is so effing 80s i just luv’d it. More of that fun sound is found here, fun found is sound here? tongue twister lol.
Deerhunter – Never Stops, has kind of a deathcab sound i’m liking it. I haven’t really heard anything i dislike yet by these guys, i can’t wait to here some more good things. Keep up the good work.
Metric – Sick Muse, this chick has a great voice, i thought it was a dude for a while, but it’s fun.
The Saints – Army Navy or is it Army Navy – The Saints, not sure but it’s a terrific song. ***

M83 – We Own The Sky / Kim & Jessie

Two great songs. Certainly the meaning of song is being rewritten at this stage, they’re more electro pop tracks with lyrics. But they’re sweet. M83 & MGMT are leading the way back to 80s esque music. The 80s led to the dirty garage rock of the 90s (Nirvana) and its ‘alternative’ brethren now, and the electronic sound of 80s music disolved into its own genre of “nobody listen’s to techno” as rapped by Eminem.

Luckily in the late 9Os bands were trying to bring it back again, and now finally we’re seeing more blending of the lines between rock/pop/electronic.

Stereolab – Les Yper Sound

(The above is a crappy version of how I see the perfect blend of electronic & rock music from the late 9Os early OOs). Certainly Kim & Jessie, We Own the Sky, Electric Feel, Kids are all very electronic rock. Last year we had the huge success of Peter Bjorn & John’s Writers Block Album. That was my album of 2008.

I’ve since retired it, but I could listen to those beats and rhythms endlessly. I love the fact that the styles are blending. My too favorite types of music in one. Hooray. I think Prodigy was an early band to put catchy lyrics to a hardcore electronic song, and now we’re seeing the cooling off of the steam, with lighter more versatile tunes that can blend the lines of alternative and electronic, almost unnoticed.

Prodigy – Breathe

M83’s Kim and Jessie is a fun track with a deep 80s music feeling. It would fit in perfectly on the Donnie Darko sountrack right next to Notorious by Duran Duran. It’s soft and sunny attitude dances along on a sunday afternoon.

We Own the Sky is a more trancy electro rock song. This is my new closing time song when i’m turning back the registers at work and shutting everything down, i turn up the stereo as loud as it goes. It lacks the big beat of the trance sound, but the repetition and poppy flow is all there.

There are just so many different variations right there on the electronic rock thing right now. There will certainly have to be subdivisions. Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Battles, there are a lot of contenders and with great tunes. I’ll probably have to hit up these three next. And see where the story takes me. This song is perfect. It’s a start to finish perfect simple song. Every rhyme rhymes unforced, every beat tickles your nose, the slight strum to the guitar only guides the listener through this short and sweet gem. She’s so gentle and lovely to look at and hearing her voice is no different, it makes me wish i was sipping Mai Tai’s with a special someone on North Shore Oahu watching some great surfing.

Interpol – Pioneer to the Falls

I discovered this song on Left of Center in 2007/8. I supposed I only thought of posting my song interests to this blog sort of recently, so hearing this song on the radio again recently was a nice refresher, and it is so beautiful. Interpol has gotten bad fan press from superfans of Joy Division for being unoriginal and uninspired. I agree his voice sounds similar, to the Joy Division guys, but the quality is tons better. Joy Division has a song titled “Atmosphere” that’s pretty interesting if you’re into the origins of great music.

I don’t really listen to the whole CDs by these bands since I don’t buy music. I hear everything on the radio or on youtube. I went on itunes last night to buy Diamond Sea by Sonic Youth. :( . They wouldn’t let me, unless i bought the whole album, but the song is on two different albums and i want the best version, but if i’m going to buy the album i want the album with the best track listing, so which album do i buy? So dumb all i wanted was a 99cent song and they couldn't even deliver. Of course, the song is 20 minutes long so i'll have to survive with the 5 minute excerpt versions on youtube for now.

The three stowaways might be him and his two children which survive the deceased. You definitely get the feeling of wanting for that lost soul to have a home in your heart forever in your soul. It’s all there. I can listen to this song over and over again.

The sound is crisp and has an echo as if they’re in a church or large hall which just adds to the funeral effect. I dig it. Enjoy!

The Teenagers – Homecoming

The French are so classic. They aren’t quite happy being French. Thats the feeling i get when i hear this tune. Even the lyrics are quite silly and kinky. Just the fact that you can detect the strong French accent of the lead singer telling a story about a british foreign exchange student, is quite hysterical. It’s like he doesn’t know that American girls fancy sexy frenchman. I can at least attest to that. At Richmond I was friends with a french student from “Versailles”. That was pretty much the catch phrase for innumerable beddings of Richmond gals. They lyrics are also telling of the mind of the average male/female. On one side we see a sharp crudeness and on the other side we see an honest sweetness. I think its true to how men and women think of the whole fling situation.

From 1991 until 1993 I had the pleasure of living just outside of Paris in the suburb of Chatou. When I first arrived in France I was a wide eyed nine year old with a cautionary tone. Everything was amazing and cool, but also alien to me. I’m not sure I knew how special it was until many years later.

My mother has been widely known as Big Sue throughout my childhood and into my teens. I think Kimmy Richardson coined the phrase at an away swim meet where my mother was a chaparone. Mom was raised in a Catholic school where the ruler was still a common form of punishment for bad girls and the cane for bad boys. Certainly the pen was never mightier than the sword in my upbringing. Kimmy must have received a small taste of her wraith on a night the girls tried to sneak out. I hope she cares to elaborate.

Big Sue was obsessed with swimming. When we lived in France we immediately sought out some ridiculous swim league in Versailles that had an olympic size swim pool, communal (guys/girls) showers (i loved that), olympic diving boards. it was pretty awesome. In the many years since leaving France, I have still as yet never been to another pool as sensational as this one. University of Maryland has nice facilities, so does UVA, but the pool at Versailles is unrivaled in size, and awe it inspired in my young soul.

If you thought Big Sue was rough, man you should have met this coach. She never smiled. She never laughed, she was a drill instructor dishing out orders to her troops. All the members of the team looked like champs. All the young kids my age were buff 9 and 10 year olds. sprinting through enormous sets. It was truly painful to swim under such a dictator. We definitely learned new ways to stretch our muscles, and push ourselves through dry land exercises. At some point there was a fight between the coach and Big Sue and we had to join the local Chatou club in a rinkydink pool, but at least the people were friendly and more carfree. I quickly befriended some of the young kids on the team and began to learn French at a much more rapid pace. I saw what they saw, but i also saw it with my perspective and it made me chuckle a little. When I arrived. Michael Jackson released the Black & White Album. Kids were absolutely obsessed with Mykaylle Jochson. They had all his albums, I only had one. I bought my first two compact discs at La Defense plaza outside where my dad worked for IBM. I bought Metallica’s Black Album (the one with the snake) and Michael Jackson’s B&W. Did it really take 19 years for the “doesn’t make a difference if your black or white” to result in an Obama victory? That was the cool song with the funky McCully Culkin introduction. *BAM *BAM *BAM TURN DOWN YOUR STEREO*.

I believe our second swim coach’s name was Ka-treen and my friend’s dad was Christie-on. He was a pain in the ass just like my mother. Except he’d swim right through you and not know the difference. I think he liked it. He was a weird ass old dude. I think he resented that we were American’s swimming on his team. But he was eager for me and his son to play together so i could teach him English. They invited me for dinner a few times and I noticed just how far the American roots went in France. This kid and his brother had old Nike Shoes in their closet going back the last 10 years in original boxes. it was bizarre. I feel like they changed my perspective on nike shoes forever.

Moreso than my sister and I ever were. Don’t get me wrong, Monica was always a very good swimmer. She had attended Stamford Swim Camp, Virginia Swim Camp, and all the major competitions. She usually took home gold, silver or bronze which were often blue, red, or gold ribbons. Everyone was usually shocked if I won a blue ribbon, I still go back and rifle through an old shoebox of red and gold ribbons. My mindset was just against me winning. Monica could be told to change her stroke once and then permanently absorb it. I’ve never been able to do that. I just get a song stuck in my head while i’m swimming and then two laps go by and i can’t remember what i was trying to focus on doing, was it hold my hand the right way or kick my feet harder. And then the next thing you know I’ve swum a couple more laps and can’t remember what lap i’m on. I always had trouble focusing when swimming. It’s just so easy to go slow. I think cooldown, friendships, and hot showers after swim practice were the only things i liked about swimming.

I think that Thurston Moore may be talking about his good friend Kurt Cobain. I'm not sure when this song was released, but several lyrical couplets are telling in this regard:

"Time takes its crazy toll
and how does your mirror grow
you better watch yourself when you jump into it
'cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul"

I see this as an artist looking at themselves and trying to create an image, and then eventually buying into that image and believing that they are the image they built in their minds. Sort of like how Kurt became a rockstar junkie, because the artists he grew up listening to were drug addicts and larger than life in his eyes...

"I wonder how it came to be my friend
that someone just like you has come again
you'll never, never know how close you came
until you fall in love with the diamond rain "

I think they're talking about drugs at this point...It's hard to believe that anyone would subject themselves to traumatic drug abuse until they've actually done it..."Falling in love with the diamond rain" would then mean getting hooked on something...

This is a pat on the head of their friend...If you look in Kurt's eyes, you can see the drive and beauty and determination to make his art, and the kids (ie. his fans) actually changed their dress code from designer etc. to flannel, changed their whole scene after watching him on MTV.

Kurt and Courtney ...the boy looking into the mirror and seeing the looking-glass girl, a reference to Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass...Curiouser and curiouser. Obviously, Kurt and Courtney were both junkies & also rock stars so I don't have to spell it out, do I?

Anyhow, maybe my reading is too literal but that is what I think Thurston was thinking of when he wrote the song. It could also be an exercise in generalities and things that rhyme...There is no way to be certain with these indie rock demigods.

First off, just want to give a special thanks to Aquariumdrunkard for pointing me in the right direction of the legendary Neil Young. He had a post in December of “Don’t Let it Bring You Down.” The song is amazing. I’ve found a few more old amazing songs out there of his, but I feel this one everyone can relate to.

I’m so jealous that i don’t play guitar when i see footage like this. I own two guitars an Epiphone SG in cherry and a Gibson Firebird in Black and White with gold. It’s very sexy. I bought the SG in college to jam on, but i sucked. So i ended up inviting people over to play it for me and entertain me. It worked out well until he started impressing my girlfriends and going after them. And then i didn’t like him so much anymore. James…I had to kick him out of my room one night. It was kind of sad. I just couldn’t take it anymore. He was hitting on my xgf. Of course i was madly in love with her so these things can be expected when the other guy’s just looking to bone her :(.

I gave the SG to my dad and set it up in such a way that all he had to do was pick it up and play it if he ever wanted to. As it turns out for the past five years since i brought it home for him, he’s been playing it regularly. Pretty funny. Now he owns a Gibson Les Paul Sunbeam, (he bought the epiphone Casino and didn’t like the sound so returned it and bought the Gibson Casino in black and white. That’s all back in New Canaan, CT.

At my dad’s house in Cali he has an old Yamaha acoustic guitar. i tried playing that a lot in college, but it’s quite huge so i couldn’t really get used to it. I think thats what provoked me to get an electric guitar. I bought my second electric right after i moved out to Cali after college in 2005. The Firebird. It’s a beauty. I bought it on ebay for 900 bux. It’s got one little rub mark on it, like some piece of rubber mashed against it. It’s not even a dent or a scratch. It’s crazy. You have to really look for it. The thing plays incredibly. Everytime i meet someone who plays guitar I try to get them to play it haha.

Old man is a light and swimming song. It reminds me of so much. How similar everyone is. Not much has changed between now and the time of neanderthals. People still eat, sleep, live and die. It’s crazy. We’re all so concerned with being different and trying to stand out, and yet we’re all so very similar. In Young’s song he comes across as defensive, almost like a father and son relationship. It reminds me of Cat Stevens Father, Son.

Youngs voice is amazing. It’s so melodic, he could just be speaking the words, but we all want to moan and eww with him. That’s how powerful this song is, you really want to sing it out and share it with people which is exactly what Young does. He shouts it out with vigor.

Santana – Samba Pa Ti

Going back to what i’ve said about tone and a sense of understanding to the rhthym, this is another toon that sounds amazing and i can listen to over and over again and try to imagine what Sanatana was going through when he thought out the tale of this unsung hero. It starts out sad and dejected and then it comes up and starts roaring. Almost like a whole lifetime being revealed in these short minutes. Slow and peacefull like a crying baby and then we pass through the blissful days of youth, adolescence, and adulthood, and old age. For me it seems like it chronicles a whole lifetime in the short period of four and a half minutes. “Samba Pa Ti.”

Ryan Adams – Wonderwall

I absolutely love this track. Ryan Adams’ cover is so good in fact that Left of Center has reported that Oasis now sings this song live the same way. I think thats got to be pretty unusual, probably even a first. It’s quiet, sad, depressing, caring, absolute, resolute, uplifting. I don’t even need to post lyrics, everyone knows them from this classic Oasis tune of the mid to late 90s, back when i didn’t even care for Oasis, back when i was too minded of what was in and cool. Girls liked Oasis and guys liked 311. It’s pretty silly, but that’s the world I lived in.

Adams’ Wonderwall takes me back to the romantic college days of Junior year, courting a Belgian girl (or rather obsessing over) and the sense of love i lost, and have been unable to regain since. It’s true, now i’m a grumpy 27 year old and no one knows why. At times it sounds like he’s crying when he’s singing, which brings me back to University of Richmond Jeter Hall room 212, I’d cry myself to sleep at night listening to depressing ass music deeply saddened that the one thing i had come to love and cherish could not find the same love in her own heart.

Luckily I’ve moved on, but I’m still riding solo. :)

I was reading on last.fm that everyone things Vampire Weekend wouldn’t exist if Ra Ra Riot had come out sooner, and i just had to disagree. I think Vampire Weekend uses some of the same instruments, but the sound is completely different. Vampire Weekend sounds like a rock band and Ra Ra Riot sounds like an acoustic ensemble. They feed different hungers in my own persona.

”Kids Don’t Stand a Chance” is a a sad but true song probably about college campus recruiters who come and show off their aquired bling through big business and try to lure creative young minds to join the force and continue to toil away day in and day out so that they can go home to sleep on a softer pillow. "Sled23" got it first.

Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks

This song became popular in indie cultures right around Halloween when they started playing every song they could find that had anything to do with Halloween, in this case ghosts. Tegan and Sarah’s Ghost song also got a lot of play as well as a song called Halloween Head which was kind of funny, because i have no idea how you could come up with such a word. “Ghost Under Rocks” starts out slowly introducing each instrument guitar, violin plucking, drums & vocals. That’s one of the main things i like about this band is they use so many different sources to create a fun song. Their new album Rhumb Line has just been released go get that shit!

Kosheen – Resist

I’m not really sure why i have Kosheen on my iphone, but now that its there and i’ve heard this song, i’m really glad i do. I put all my “new music” on endless repeat this morning and this was one of the tracks that came up. Other tracks came up but they weren’t memorable i suppose. One track by cat stevens came up off his 3 disc box collection and i was 25 yards away upstairs dying for the song to end so i didn’t have to walk downstairs and change it. Then Resist came on and about four tracks later of decent tunes that i’ve heard dozens of times (black river killer) i still had to walk downstairs to backtrack and put it on again.

Resist is a soft electronic song. It’s got good cool rhythms, beats, and sounds unusual. It reminds me of Santogolds – Starstruck, which is harder and darker, whereas Resist makes me want to sing “you’re always talking, you’re out of control, you’re always talking” and starstruck just makes me wanna partay! Sian Evans has a great voice. I think you’ll like it.

Glasvegas - Geraldine

I first heard this dynamite song on Left of Center at around 2am driving home from San Francisco to Monterey, the Sunday after thanksgiving. I’m only just now writing about it because a friend of mine relies on me for new tunes and told me yesterday when i told her to check this song out that i had told her to do that a month ago and that she owned the album already. I thought that was pretty cute and classic since i personally don’t own the album, but regularly listen to it on youtube. That night i kept rewinding the Sirius machine to hear this jam over and over again. Actually to be fair i usually let a lot of other songs play after a song i like, just to be sure i really like it. That night i heard other fun songs like Of Montreal’s “Id Engager” and Ra Ra Riot’s plethora of super-duper fantastico tracks (ghost under rocks, dying is fine, do you realize). Geraldine has a soulful approach that builds her up to a heavenly body or a guardian angel. It’s really can feel like a magnificent song. As it turns out the song is really a tribute to a woman named Geraldine that sells the bands merchandise and accompanies them to each show.

The song starts out with a high guitar solo and in come the booming drums. Lots of girls will no doubt fall in love with the accent. I personally didn’t even notice it until someone on songmeanings pointed out the fact that he was Scottish. Honestly the only words i think i understood the first dozen times i heard this song were “I’ll be the angel on your shoulder, my name is Geraldine, i’m your social worker" and then something about “I see you, i love you too”. The song sounds just as strong now that i’v read the lyrics as it did when i didn’t understand it. It reminds me of opera and hearing Andre Bocelli belt out these ballads, in a foreign tongue, you can sense the depth of each song. We know from his voice, the music, and the tone what he’s trying to say. Because we’re so familiar with those tones in our everyday life. We know how anger sounds, we know how sadness sounds, we know how grief sounds, we know how pain sounds. That’s what i sensed in glasvegas, remorse, pain and suffering, and a calm gratefulness to the subject.

The Power of Music

Last night I was cleaning shelves in ye old druggy store. An old classic by Bob Dylan snuck its way on the radio. The song is one of those rare gems that comes along and just knocks you off your feet. I like it most when i don’t hear it for a really long time and then suddenly it appears. I get goose bumps, the shivers, all of it. It’s amazing how a song can sound cool or powerful when heard the first time. I know for certain i was surprised when i heard Bob Dylan’s version as a kid. I thought it was a silly little acoustic version of the same song by Guns n Roses. I was just an uncultured listener then. Finally after years of listening, watching, and reading I’m able to accept the two versions as great in their own right. GNR use Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door to represent their own “living on the edge” lifestyle, whereas Dylan’s has meaning, vision, and purpose. Go watch Peckinpah’s “Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.” A beautiful film. It touches all senses. I get goose bumps just thinking about the movie. To this day I’m still in awe after the first time i saw it a few years ago. The scene where KOHD comes on is magnificent and terrible. Pat Garret requests the help of an old friend a sheriff in a quiet town. He knows Billy the Kid is coming for him and no one else will help. They hold up at a barn, just the two of them. Billy the Kid shows up with his posse and it all goes downhill. The old sheriff gets shot a dozen times. He exits the barn riddled with bullets, blood oozing out of his body. The sun is low and hot, reddish orange in color. The old sherriff kneels down and pulls of his badge, and unclips his gun. He is ready to go. His body hangs lifeless in a kneeling position. Honor, good, truth, and justice are knocking on heaven’s door. What good they did this man. You never know something like that is possible. There are so many films out there that are just movies. They were made to make money and that’s it. Peckinpah made films that will never be forgotten and Dylan wrote lyrical ballads that still shock us with their truth and insight today.

A beautiful song, a simple poem, check out the lyrics here. Until I read the lyrics I absolutely couldn’t understand what he was saying. His thick Scottish accent was making me try to make sounds just to sing it, because the sound and feeling is all there, it could be sung in Japanese, but the way it’s sung still carries a powerful meaning and sense of danger and safety. Song has a lot of replay potential.

Track 4: Of Montreal – Id Engager

Funny little track. Check out the lyrics here. There’s a lot going on in this song. It’s got some remix potential, some light techno beats, electronic, an 80s attitude, poppiness (which is a combination of happy and poppy). Just like Geraldine your sad when its over and you want to hear it again.

Track 5: Blitzen Trapper – Furr
Great folky tune. I can really feel like I'm in the setting he describes. He plays about two chords the whole song, but his capable voice takes you on a wayward journey. Check out the lyrics here. I’ll try to ease you into some acoustic stuff.

Track 6: Tony Lucca – True Story
This song reminds me of American Pie, it’s an excellent acoustic story. check it out. You don’t need any lyrics its sung in perfect American English. Unless maybe you’re Scottish and you think you speak perfect English :/.

Track 7: Landon Pigg – Coffee Shop
I was kind of in love with this track a couple months ago, but it still ranks up pretty high on my list and I haven’t featured it in a CD yet recently so It’s got to be in here somewhere. It’s got a calm loving feel to it. When I hear it I imagine a warm quiet artsy coffee shop where too lovers meet over a cup of Joe. I’m usually very particular about acoustic songs that I like. But this one is sung so well, his voice is amazing. He could just talk and it would sound better than 99% of the artists out there. Obviously the artists voice sets the tone for the music and genre, but Landon Pigg’s is pleasant and original, soft and honest (posh). Check out the lyrics here.

iPhone 3G 2.0 How to Disable iPhone Backup UG!

Finally it's over. Thanks to a message board post i've finally turned off this stupid iphone backup crap. I got a 16 gig iphone cause i knew i was going to easily fill it up with music, pictures, apps etc. So it's pretty much floating aroung 15 gigs right now full. And everytime i plug it in, itunes wants to back it up so that takes about 5 hours each time and i feel bad stopping it cause i don't want to break anything, but turns out it's all good

you don't really need to disable it: here's the solution: it's a setting you chose when you first set up your iphone which does not normally pop up again. Here is my step by step guide to undoing what most of you with slow backups did and making your backups take about 90 seconds on average. the thing that's making everyone's backup take an hour plus is that your sending your crash reports to apple everytime you backup This is an option that you clicked on your very first sync that you will now change: to prevent long delays in the backup process (it's NOT due to Apps, it's due to sending long, long, really long, log files of errors/ debugging info, very, very, slowly,to Apple it seems for many users at least, including myself with over 18 apps) If it starts to sync stop it right away by clicking the x (top middle of itunes). Then go to devices click your iphone so the middle window displays the iphone info and uncheck the "automatically sync when this iphone is connected" you'll find it under the summary tab of your iphone if you're not already there. Then unplug and re-plug your phone back in. in itunes, right click on your iphone select 'reset warnings' click on sync you will then see a dialog box indicating: "Your iPhone contains diagnostic information which may help Apple.....etc..." click on the check box "do not ask me again" (so that this should be permanent, unless you click on 'reset warnings' another time) (if you click on 'Show Details" the computer should open the directory containing all the error logs, I wouldn't delete them, but perhaps you could even flush these out by deleting, but I'm not sure what if any risks that could cause) Here is the solution: click on 'Don't Send' That's it! enjoy a nice fast backup, and a nice fast sync, all within about 2 minutes, if fully loaded for it all to finish. Just like Mac OS X, the iPhone generates crash reports when things go wrong. These files are sent back to your computer whenever the iPhone is connected and synchronized with iTunes. In Mac OS X, they’re located in /Library/Logs/Crashreporter/MobileDevice/ You might find a variety of files here with different prefixes that end in .crash. For instance, files that start with: “Maps” indicate a crash in the Google Maps application “MobileSafari” indicate a crash in Safari for iPhone

Hi, this is my first post here. Usually I use Sirius Satellite Radio at home and at work to listen to music. Primarily, because i pay for it. So why wouldn't I. Naturally I've grown tired of it. I've had since 2005. There's always new stuff sure. But personalized radio. now that is cool. So yes i'll say it...the word that should never be heard on last.fm. I use Pandora. Okay it's out sorry. I use pandora and Sirius and last.fm.
One thing i've noticed about online radio, having used these two products is the genres that an artist falls under, because of how users have tagged them.

However. I'll use some prime examples to show how tags have failed us and the community at large.

Tagging Pearl Jam as hardcore rock. Okay it's not that hard core. I love pearl jam, but i hate godsmack, but if i type in Pearl Jam it lumps in Godsmack. Pearl Jam has some loud songs. But I personally consider them to be a progressive rock band. So what i'm saying is tagging should be used only for song titles. Every song is different in an artists playbook.
Look at Great Lake Swimmers, almost all of their stuff is pretty folky and soft rockish and acousticy. I am a huge fan of Onigara. When it first came out I went to Borders, but they didn't have it, I went to iTunes but they didn't have it. So I went somewhere else. My friend mininova. This is a young group, a lot of their stuff sounds the same. They haven't even begun to branch out. They're untainted by commercial success.

Eddie Vedder's latest CD that accompanies the terrific film - Into The Wild, is incredible. It's not a hardcore heavy drum guitarry rock album, it's a from the heart, american masterpiece, both critical of this nation and our ideals and has inspired me to rethink my own. I'd call it an american folk album.

I love to listen to Eddie Vedder, Great Lake Swimmers, Reed Kd, and others.

But when i type in Eddie Vedder on Pandora or Last.fm it plays me Godsmack and Pearl Jam songs in the mixture. I don't like Godsmack. and when i'm listening to folk music i don't want to listen to listen to "Its Evolution baby!" I try to listen to quiet, happy stuff at work so customers aren't all "why are they cursing and screaming on the radio?" That's not right, the software is flawed. It needs to get fixed to better represent my intentions.

I've noticed this with other groups too. City and Colours, the lead singer sings beautiful acoustic rock. It's personal and from the heart. Now because he was formerly in a screamo band his music gets lumped with other screamo/emo bands that just suck imo. I don't want to listen to screamo music with gorgeous relaxing acoustic bands.

So that makes me think that the tags are flawed because it says City and Colours is an emo band because he was in some screamo/emo band before. I don't know what classifies something as emo, but usually its whiny kids singing about a lost relationship with a girl who doesn't love them anymore even though they're barely old enough to have had a chance to consider love. So they're emo, they're emotional, they're suicidal, etc. /wrists and all that terrible stuff. No I do not classify City and Colours anywhere near emo. It's a guy with a guitar. It all sounds very acoustic. It's incredible i can't wait to see him live. I've told my sister to see his show for my birthday (oct 6) on October 5th in NYC at Terminal 5 (wtf that is) with Tegan and Sara.

Users need to be able to select an artist or a song they like and tag that song to their own personal needs. And then when you see similarities in how people rate things you can start recommending things to people. Kind of like netflix ratings and how they recommend movies to me i've never heard of before and usually end up blown away at how compelling they are.

If User-Specific/Adjustable tags isn't the answer, fine, but what is?

Let's review what i wouldn't change first, the things i don't find fault in:

Size is adequate: Check!

Screen is adequate: Check!

Numbers of Buttons: Check!

Audio Out: Check!

Speaker Phone: Check

Bluetooth: Check / Err Not.

Okay now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's look at the phones faults.

1) Ringtones blow! Now that you know my history of using Sony Ericsson Phones. If you've ever had one you know about the Walkman feature which lets you put songs on there and blast them out over your speakerphone. I've taken it out in bars before. They're closing so they turn off the music to try and kick people out. So i take out my phone. Lamer that i am and blast out Boston toons. The owner comes in: "Pablo i thought i told you to turn off the music" so these people GTFO! "I did, it's this guys phone." "oh. Err. k" exit. LOL's from everyone at the bar. what a moron he must have felt like. Poor guy. So phone playing music. Check iPhone does that. Excellent. Now with SE software i can go in there and say okay Play this song as my ringtone that i uploaded via USB. But with the iPhone you have to convert the files to m4rs or mp4rs or something stupid. I mean you can listen to a song from your ipod playlist over the speaker. but you can't use it as your ringtone? that's pretty dumb. eet maka no sense.

5 hours later after watching this 5 minute movie I've uploaded 100 ringtones to the iPhone each 30 seconds long, varying stages of the song. Stupid phone that's supposed to be 10x better and costs 10x more to use should have 10x more the power and possibilities of any other phone. Well that's just not the case.

2) Settings blow! You can't change hardly any settings for the phone. Why can't i say "line up icons" or "organize icons by date" or "by alphabet". Everytime an application updates itself it gets moved somewhere else in the dash. Increase Icon size maybe? Lock Safari window horizontal? Vertical? I like to use it in bed and watch youporn, but when my head is on the side and i keep trying to rotate it so it's lvl with my vision i can't because it keeps flipping. That makes browsing the internet painful, among otherthings. Most of the settings are just Yes or No questions On or Off? Application settings for some of the apps i have are: Credits? Are you serious? Bizarre!

3) Weather Blows! It should default to your current location all the time and then let you add others to see those locations too. Weather icon should reflect actual temperature.

4) Maps App sux. Maps app doesn't find it. But local.google does? How does that work?

5) Password? Sheah! Apple Store needs my login everytime i want to download an app. Um. Hello this is my phone. It's mine. Who else is using my phone? Most login things in safari and iphone don't offer to remember passwords?

6) No flash support? um hello. please stop smoking crack. How can you have a phone in the 21st century with no flash support?

7) Camera? In case you didn't see. Everyone in the iPhone line had their camera phone and were walking the line making a movie of all these crazy people waiting for their iPhone. Not a picture. A movie. Why can't you make video with the iPhone. It has multiple gigs don't it? fo shwazy! Why's it so hard to take a picture of yourself with your iPhone. I can never get my finger to hit the button at the right time. SE software lets you send photos to people. Why wouldn't this be an obvious option on the iPhone?

8) Yesterday i had 2 pages of apps. Today there's 4 pages of apps? I haven't added any more software. The thing updated a couple wares, band now they're all spaced out all over the damn place wtf's up with that Jobsy!?

9) No Stylus? How can you have a notes app that doesn't draw or use a pen on it? Come on that's Toshiba Protege 3500 like 6 or 7 years ago stuff, come on now. I still have my 3505.

10) Lastly the keyboard sux asshole. Seriously! No disable T9 come on now. I do not ever use spell check. I hate it. It always tries to spell perfectly spelled words wrong. It tries to capitalize things that i say should be lowercase. iPhone Spellcheck is no different. You have got to find a way for me to turn this stupid feature off. You have no idea how many angry text messages asking people what the duck they're talking about? and them returning the question duck? and i try to respond fuck, but it keeps making it duck. It wants me to tell it not to misspell everything everytime it tries to misspell it? SE software back again. "spell word" option lets you add words to the dictionary. This is Freakanomics 101: Learn to adjust your software to the needs of your customer base. Why can't i make the keyboard larger or smaller? I have fat fingers, they're not toothpicks which is what you need to type on these little things.

11) Why does the iphone freeze. And why won't the power button shut it down? You have to hold down the Home and Power Button for three secs until the apple logo appears and it resets. or shuts down and then you have to wait and turn it on again yourself. What a pain? Really trying to aggravate me now aren't you?

12) Send Contact feature. Where is the send contact feature. Doesn't some kind named Joe Schmo call you and ask for someones phone number. Now you have to search for it, you used to just be able to send the contact as a text message to them, very simple all the info intact.

Let's take a little journey back in time

The year is 1997 my dad buys me some POS Nokia. (Obviously at the time it was a sick phone. By 2000 standards it was a POS). I could call home from anywhere. It had some gangster black and white face plate on it. I moved to japan in Jan of '98, so half way through sophmore year. Great, it could make phone calls and we could play snake on it. Grand. We went to NYC and played snake while waiting for our buddy to come back with our fake ids. I still have it. I charge it up every few years and play snake on it. That game is classic, 2, 4, 6, 8 what buttons do we appreciate! those were the controls very simple up down left right. Just don't close in on yourself. you'll die. We waited and waited for those fake ids but lost 160 bills a piece and our friend drove this guy 20 minutes uptown to go get them. he got out of the taxi and never came back. We were like uh...this sux. I think this phone introduced us to text messagine on phones. We were already used to AIM and ICQ, but txting on a phono. el amazingo!

Upgrade Numero Uno: Dad got me in on a Metro PCS phone some POS phone (at the time it really was a POS phone) that could make calls in the metro and it was super cheap. We had that for about three months and then learned that metro and subway were different so it only worked some of the time and it sucked at making calls in Tokyo because theres big fucking buildings everywhere. The phone kinda sucked because it was el-cheapo, it was all in japanese. i could only make phone calls by dialing memorized numbers cause i couldn't figure out how to use it otherwise.

Upgrade Numero Dos: J-Phone. My pops and I both got two J-Phones from some swanky J-Phone company, long before iPhones and i's became more popular than J's. I got a metallic orange one and he got a army green one. They had nifty little velcro things that clipped to your belt so you never had to worry about it. It clicked on and swung around till kingdom come. It was grand. It was strictly a phone for making calls and sending text messages. Other than that it hung at my side like a loyal companion.

Upgrade Numero Tres: Sony Ericsson T637. If i could find a brand new one of these today, i'd totally get all over it. I never had reception probs with this phone. The numbers mashed great. Took great photos. It really introduced me to the greatness of the SE operating system. something i'm daily trying to imitate on the iPhone 3G.

Downgrade Numero Uno: I upgraded to the W600i after my T637 keys had been replaced twice and just kept getting dirt stuck in them making it virtually unuseable. The battery kept dying and at&t kept calling to tell me i was due for an upgrade. So i was like shit its practically free so why not. So dumbly i agreed to the new W600i. The latest walkman phone from SE. Well this thing kinda sucked. It was fatter than my T637. It weighed more. The keys wer uglier. It was one of those pointless flip phones. But it introduced one great feature. Walkman! This thing is a glorified boombox i swear. It's smoking it jams out tunes. nonstop. I used to love taking it down to Carmel Beach and smoking a cigar blasting Beatles - A Day in the Life. or The Growlers - Track 4 my ringtone of choice. Aesthetically speaking it was a downgrade. It was bigger, fatter, heavier, bulkier, obtusier, unrefined, unsexy, uncool. I took it to Euope though and it cranked out 500 dollars worth of phone calls while i bumped about Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London, etc. I know it was 500 dollars cause i got the bill when i got back. But hey i was travelling alone, calling people to say what up. It was awesome, worth every penny.

American Graffiti Soundtrack - George Lucas. The story actually goes that Lucas invented the American Soundtrack. Apparently he made it possible for Filmmakers to use contemporary music in films. Prior to this Films used classical music or music composed to fit the films tones. In this film Lucas uses popular contemporary music. That still survives in the American Consciousness as Oldies, the original Rock & Roll movement. It all sounds poppy by today standards of hard drums, loud electric guitars, big bass sounds and attention on the singers voice. It would have been incredible to be a teenager back in the 60s. Compared to what had come before. The sound of the music was all about having fun and cutting loose. Now, I'm not so sure what we're all trying to cut loose from. Maybe we're all unsure about how far the industry can go. But alas Laissez-Faire for me! Songs that remind me how original things still can be include songs from Playlist 3: Time to Pretend, Aly Walk With Me, Crimeweave. I feel there's something for everyone in this playlist. Right down to the Gently cover. Shimabukuro makes it sound fresh and original. I was listening to it today on the way to Gorda. I actually had to listen to some Silence on the way home. The music was depressing me. I surprised myself. I went to work today and just felt so estranged. It's really time for me to leave. I'm glad I've resolved myself to do it. Funny I have no idea what i'll do in NYC. No fucking clue haha. We'll see where life takes me. I watched a good movie Green Street Hooligans tonight with Elijah Wood he says something after the initial fight of the film: Once you've taken a few punches and realise you're not made of glass, you don't feel alive unless you're pushing yourself as far as you can go.

I heard that Elliot Smith did a cover of this just before he died/khs. If anyone has that i'd love to hear it. This story brings me back to the incredible film A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. A genuine film. I really enjoyed this one. The song is so powerful, magicful, etc. I really think this song would just have been another Cat Stevens song if this film hadn't memorialized as THE Cat Stevens song. I imagine it would be tough to grasp the power of this songs story without the story of Saints in your head.

Into the Wild & A Guide... are incredible films everyone should see them. I'm seriously considering trading in my 401k which is only about 006k right now and taking a year off of "life" & "society" to read, write, live, find myself, etc. I drove from Monterey down to Gorda today. It's about 80 Miles sout of Monterey. Took me about 2 hours to get down there. I drove down in my alpine white beemer from the 80s. It's a classic. It's quick and cute. You'd like it too if you saw it. What is it's soundtrack? I can't decide. But when i set out on my great adventure I hope i find out. I was planning on quitting my job in January and moving to New York City. But I'm thinking of really taking a drive. I can't imagine leaving the beauty of Monterey and heading straight for a big city, where i have the sense that i'd feel very alone and claustrophobic in all at the same time. Even though I know people there. A helluva lot more folks than i know in Monterey, which is about 2. My roomie Jesse and Kurt PS3 who calls me TedBox 360. We met at the PS3 line at Target i was number 7 and he was number 8, they had 6 PS3s so we were kind of bummed we wouldn't be making a profit of 9,000 dollars instantly after buying this sucker. But now we know. Camping out for 3 days actually pays off.

Well i just did LAST.fm and i couldn't do one without the other, so here we go!

Pandora is sweet. It's quick, fast, that's kind of the same i guess, but you get the point. You type in an artist and boom you'll hear stuff by that artist and by other artists just like that. Just be careful though again, cause If you add Staind and you just like the poppy Staind songs than you're kind of screwed cause its going to try to play you crap like Korn and Red Faced Angry Nazis and stuff. I don't know if RFAN exists but they'd play corny stuff like that if they did. Yarr we're angry! we scream and roar at the mic woohoo!

Ease of use: Login, create your profile its a breeze.

No itunes information uploading. No programs installed on your computer. It uses flash i assume cause it's crazy fast. and flash is like ... a flash so...you know. Um. bollocks. That's british for dogs bawls btw.

You basically create radio stations based on what kind of music you like. So I like Stronger by Kanye West, well it'll make me a playlist with Justin Timberlake songs in it. Well maybe not, but they should they're pretty much the same. No you'll get Common and Jay-Z if you type in Kanye West. And Peter Bjorn & John found me some older PB&J songs. LOL PB&J I LOVE PB&J. PB&J on Thomas English Muffins YUMMY!...make sure they're Toasted then the pb melts so good! Moni u need to do a write up on the yummiest snack that is fun to make and easy!

Great Lake Swimmers got me some other cool folky stuff. But they don't have Reed KD on there yet. Reed KD is awesome try to see a show. He's mostly out in Cali, but book him up he's based out of Santa Cruz. The chickie who sings with them is cute and has a great voice. I'm mad when she doesn't sing with them, luckily it's not often. "Empty Bottles" is a great tune!

Pandora vs Last? Well when i'm at home I like last.fm because i like that it reads off of my whole music library which is pretty extensive. Three years ago i had 27 days worth of music. I imagine i have added quite a bit to that. I need to upgrade to a new ipod soon. My iPhone is cool, but i hate having to uncheck songs from my ipod cause its only 30gigs and i have like 80 gigs of music.

My music tastes. It's pretty funny a friend turned me onto listening to CDs like albums where you can't just skip through songs you have to listen to the songs in that order. I do that now, he stopped doing it which is classic, but I rarely skip through songs when i'm listening to an album and people who constantly change the song pisS mE oFF! so annoying just let it play! So yeah i have a lot of songs, that i don't necessarily listen to all the time, but I get tired of hearing A+ songs all the time. Some of those other songs may not be amazing, but they're unique and calm me down, clear my thoughts, expand my mind, make me think, remind me that these people are out there being creative and I'm able to sit here and write about it. Songs like this that i like "I do believe" by the Duke Spirit. Each time i've heard it for the longest time I was like god this songs pretty cool. It's so simple, but its quite chill. Another simple song that's sick is of course "Aly Walk With me" buy you already know that.

LAST.fm

Okay so everyone knows about LAST.fm right?

Well maybe not. It's kind of this annoying little program that opens everytime i open itunes and asks me to login or something. Well that's what i thought for the past six months. I've had it installed that long and have just forced myself to click it and exit it everytime it starts. I don't know how i could have been so lazy to not just disable the auto-start thing, but i only just realized that the password i had in there was wrong and thats why it wasn't working or scrobbling or whatever it is it does.

What it does? It scrobbles your music.

What's it for? Oh wait you don't know what scrobbling is, huh? Well it's like it goes through your music and reads all that "useless" information that itunes stores. Like song ratings, times song has been played, etcetera etcetera etcetera (a la King & I: classic *hint* movie). After invading the privacy of your entire music collection it reads the data to it's own little program LAST.fm dock or something and compares it against user statistics it collects/scrobbles from it's own site. So the more users, the more accurate information they can obtain, etc. SO Definitely check it out. Even if you don't use it to listen to new music (kind of it's main purpose) it'll still help other people find good music based off what you're listening to. So it's a win win situation right?

What's it for? It scrobbles your music. You get that right. The idea is that by scrobbling your tunes, it can make accurate reccomendations. It's not totally on yet though, but neither is Pandora's box. I type in Fade to Black by Metallica on Pandora and it plays me other shiesty/shayesty/shisty? shytie metallica songs. Fade To Black has like an orchestra in the background its a sick song. Every rock song with an orchestra in the background is pretty cool in my book. (continue to part B, whilst i rant about the music industry)

ASIDE:The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony. (I'm sure it was bittersweet seeing how they didn't make a dime off that song). Oh well, that's what you get for inadvertently sampling 3 fucking chords from a song. I mean personally I love the Last Time song and i cannot for the life of me hear anything that sounds the same, but the one market that should be totally free. Isn't. Music. L'aissez Faire should apply to the music industry, in that we SHOULD let artists sample and reuse and expand on everything. Everytime i'm listeing to the radio, at least for my generation we hear the start of Ice Ice Baby and it's just a huge let down for it to be some 70s r&b rock song. It should be: "Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis...if you got a problem yo i'll solve it, check out the hook while my dj revolves it. Vanilla ice ice baby, nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh!" Okay that was a rant.

B) So yeah in Pandora I get music I don't like because I like a few metallica songs. It's the same way in LAST.fm. It's not perfect, but it's cool enough that i'll keep coming back.

Options: Love, Ban, & Skip. Pretty simple don't like a song ban it. Don't think it's too bad than skip it. Like it than, hit Love it. There's enough out there that you probably won't here it again for a long ass time. But you can hit Recently Played, Recently Banned, Recently Loved and find everything again. And if you don't want to ban love or skip, just listen to it like a normal radio and not a soul will think any different of you. You'll still be perfect, sweet, lil ol you!

Selection: Last has a huge selection. There's groups I've never even heard of on there. Obviously I've started this blog with a chronicle of Indie Alt Rock stuff, but LAST.fm has dance, electronic, rap, folk, classical. Whatever your interests it'll have new and unusual recommendations for you.

I'd rate almost every one of these songs a 5 stars. L.E.S Artistes by Santogold i think you'll like a lot. Also the Step & the Walk by the Duke Spirit. All of MGMT's music is great The Eddie Vedder stuff is all from Sean Penn's Into the Wild movie. Writer's Block by Peter Bjorn & John is my album of the year. I can't listen to it enough. The new Beck Album is pretty good, Chemtrails and Gamma Ray are popular. I like Chemtrails better i think, but i couldn't remember it when i made this cd. The Song Trouble is used in the film "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" with Shaya LaBoeuf. Ever since seeing that movie and the song playing during the film. I get goose bumps and feel as if i too grew up in the Bronx in the summer of 59 or whenever the film takes place. You feel like Cat Stevens doesn't know it but he was destined to write such a song for this movie. And if the song was good before, it's incredible now. It's an amazing movie if you haven't seen it. I feel that way with many songs as you'll begin to see. "At the Hop" in American Graffiti is one of those moments 'you can feel it you can move it you can really start to groove it at the hop hop hop hop hop' god i love that song haha!

I think i'm going to start a blog and stick this stuff in there haha i'll link it to you.
